about Bozeman Family Fly Shop

The Bozeman Family Fly Shop is dedicated to making fly fishing accessible and enjoyable for anyone who wants to get involved in the sport. One of our goals is to break down some of the barriers in place that make it difficult to get started in fly fishing. We offer affordable products, great technical advice and the area’s largest fly tying selection.

Our products are sold at the suggested retail price (MSRP) with no additional markups. The retail pricing you see online for rods, reels, waders, and boots will be the same as the price offered at the Bozeman Family Fly Shop. We sell TFO kits starting at just $159.95 that include the rod, reel, backing, fly line, leader, and the case!! We’ll even throw in some free flies to help get you started!

In addition, we carry equipment specifically designed for women and kids to make their experience more enjoyable by using gear that fits them! Imagine that, a rod that fits properly in a smaller hand or waders that are cut specifically to fit your shape and size.

This is a community oriented fly shop focused on providing quality equipment and good advice as well as a link between the community and the shop. We offer some of our wall space to local artists so they can display and sell their work. The shop also features a locally tied fly selection to help support local tiers and promote their excellent work. We will sponsor events open to anglers of all ages including fly tying classes, fly fishing classes, and picnic style fishing days on local ponds and lakes.

The Bozeman Family Fly Shop does not currently offer a guide service but will be happy to recommend excellent local guides who take pride in offering a great all around experience including fantastic fishing and education on the region’s waters and wildlife.  Because we’re not on the water every day, we will not be offering detailed stream reports on the website, but we will know a lot about the conditions and hatches for when you stop by on your way to the water.

There are several fly shops in the area that sell top of the line equipment, provide excellent guide services, and have good fly selections. So, if you’re looking for an $800 rod or $600 waders you have lots of options in Bozeman. If on the other hand, you’re looking for quality equipment at very affordable prices or family focused product lines, you should stop in and give us a try. We’ll earn your business.

Our Services

The Bozeman Family Fly Shop is very proud to offer high quality, affordable fly tying materials and fly fishing equipment to the region’s anglers. We are also proud to be a very different style of fly shop than what is currently found in the area. Many fly shops focus primarily on tourists offering top of the line equipment, float trips down our many rivers, and clothing from the major outdoor brands. We believe that although that market strategy has its place, there is also room in Bozeman for a more family and community oriented fly shop.

An integral part of our philosophy is to encourage anglers and future anglers to spend time in the shop. We offer a large table with some vises available anytime for folks that want to tie a few flies while they’re visiting. The shop will provide the materials free of charge to help make it easier to try fly tying without spending a pile of money just to get started. This is the way fly shops used to be, and you still find them from time to time. Now, we have one in Bozeman too!

For those people looking to learn how to tie flies so they can catch fish on their own creations, a great outdoor pursuit, we will offer basic fly tying classes. The Bozeman Family Fly Shop will also provide fly fishing classes to folks who are just trying to get started in the fantastic sport of angling with a fly rod. Believe me, if I can learn to do it, so can you! We are currently in the process of lining up instructors for a rod building class as well. In this class, participants will learn how to build a fly rod from just a rod blank and the hardware! At the completion of the class, you will have a new fly rod that has your personal touches built right in!

All classes will be taught by knowledgeable instructors with many years of experience helping people learn about our wonderful sport. Many people believe that fly fishing is an expensive sport to get into, and it can be if you purchase the very high-end equipment. A good bamboo fly rod can cost as much as $3,000.00 and graphite rods commonly cost $800.00. You can easily spend $500.00 on a pair of waders and another $200.00 for the boots! Believe me, the angler with a $150 fly rod can catch just as many fish. In fact, with the rod building technology available today, many of the more reasonably priced rods will look and feel the same as the highest priced rods.

For more details on our classes, please check out the information in our Classes section or contact the shop with any questions you may have.

fish for the future

I’m starting this program to get fishing rods into the hands of area youngsters who don’t have fishing equipment.

Here’s how it works:

If you have an old rod and reel in the corner of the garage that is not being used, please consider bringing it into the shop. I’ll clean it up, put new line on it, and then add it to our collection.

If you know a youngster who could use a rod, please help yourself to the rod and reel you think would best fit them.

These rods are free of charge, but please consider making a small donation to offset my cost for the line and any terminal tackle required.

That’s it! Thanks for helping our area’s youngsters begin their fishing future!
